ABOUT ASCS

ASCS Logo
ASCS was founded by Gus Hornsby in 2008. ASCS specializes in Self-Protection training for individual civilians, specialist groups, corporates, and security and law enforcement personnel.  Training covers all fields of training including psychological, physiological, verbal and physical attributes.

See below for a short list of what we do. Our affiliations are listed at the bottom of the page.

Self-Protection

Kubotan
In self-protection training we try to look at this holistically. We need to understand that self-protection is for survival, and that the training not only involves the physical striking, kicking etc., but it also encompasses the psychological, physiological and physical aspects.

The truth is that the ‘attack’ begins long before the attack begins, and we need to attack the assailant's preparation long before there is any physical confrontation – which we must avoid at all costs. So we look at issues like the definition of survival, awareness, avoidance, gut feel, fear and so on (also covering the issues around rape). Having said that we need to be prepared to engage in physical combat should the need arise, and when this occurs you need to be able to respond effectively. To this end, we train ‘reality-based’ scenarios, with single and multiple opponents, using a variety of weapons including our natural body weapons, kubotan, shambok and many other improvised weapons.

The Approach

The Approach Training Team
The Approach is a system developed by Eddie Quinn, and is essentially a distillation of Pencak Silat Fitrah, with influences of Thai, Filipino and Indonesian martial arts.

Eddie Quinn: "What is THE APPROACH? Is it a new system? What it is, is a distillation of Pencak Silat Fitrah, with influences of Thai, Filipino and Indonesian martial arts all of which I have practiced over the years, what it provides is a very practical, easy to learn and efficient way of defending oneself and your loved ones. Remember an APPROACH with a structure is different to a style with a syllabus. Any form of self defence has to be able to fill space, the way THE APPROACH does this is basically in a primal, heavy hitting way, it reminds me of a cross between getting hit by a combination of a pick axe handle then getting thrown into the propellers of an aircraft, it hits and destroys everything that falls into its path."

Eskrima

Eskrima
Eskrima (also known as Arnis and Kali) is a weapons-based martial art which originates from the Philippines.

It is different from other mainstream martial arts in that the student is taught to train with weapons from the very start, rather than starting with empty hand training. Training generally starts with single stick, then double stick and progresses on to bladed weapons. This type of training  builds manual dexterity in the student and also results in faster conditioned responses to various attacks. The system also employs punches, kicks, joint locks, throws and groundwork.

We cover a number of different styles, from De Campo 1-2-3 Original, to Doce Pares, and Inayan eskrima.

Wing Chun

Wing Chun. Bruce Lee training with Ip Man
Wing Chun is a Chinese Martial Art, and is arguably one of the most practical and effective Kung Fu systems being taught today.

It is designed to be structurally faster than other systems. It does not rely on brute strength, therefore it can easily be learnt by men and women of all ages. Although it appears relatively simple in application, the science behind it is deep and profound. It can be said to be an integration of many scientific principles, bio-dynamics, human physiology and psychology. It is therefore an excellent vehicle to attaining and sustaining a high state of physical, mental and emotional well being.

Kyusho Aiki Jutsu

Pressure Point Chart
Kyusho Jutsu (Dim Mak) is not a martial art in itself, but rather an enhancement to a delivery system which enables the practitioner to strike vital pressure points and thus manipulate the weaker anatomical structure of the body to achieve a desired result – incapacitation, knock-out, etc.

The beauty of the system is that it also does not rely on brute force to achieve the desired response. The art also incorporates elements of healing. The "Aiki" in the name implies that a soft touch is used. Often the more gentle the delivery, the more effective it can be.
